Helpful hints while reading with your child:

1. Talk about what to do when you come to a word you don't know. Some choices are as follows: sound it out, grab the beginning sound and try the rest, read the rest of the sentence and come back to the word, use the picture to help, break the word into smaller chunks, cover up the ending to see if you can find the base word, re-read the sentence.

2. Don't forget to ask comprehension questions. What is happening so far in the story? Who are the characters? What is the setting? Can you make any predictions or inferences? What is the plot? How do you think the character feels?

3. Take turns. Have your child read a page and then you read a page. Or have your child read a book and then you read a book.

4. Get in the habit! Read everynight before bed. Make it a routine and something you do together! Every little bit helps!
